Since its establishment in 1989, Roy Oppenheim was a member of the Foundation Board of the former SUISA Foundation for Music (now FONDATION SUISA) for 19 years. Even after he had stepped down in 2008, he remained on friendly terms with the foundation and continued to support its management with his expertise and extensive network.
Following his retirement from SRG, SUISA took the opportunity to recruit Roy Oppenheim, a proven expert in communications and public affairs, as an advisor. Together with a powerful team, he headed the communications department of SUISA from 1999 to 2007 and laid the foundations and set the standards for all PR and communications matters to this day.
Both institutions were fortunate to have found in Roy a person who, after many years of experience at SRG as Director of SPlus, SRG’s first 2nd TV and cultural channel, and as Director of Swiss Radio International, had in-depth knowledge of Swiss cultural work across all sectors and its international reach. From this activity, he also brought along his openness and enthusiasm for connecting all parts of Switzerland. He cultivated an extensive network of contacts in culture, society and politics throughout the country. When it came to finding someone who could advise or help us, Roy was sure to know someone, whether in Ticino, French-speaking or German-speaking Switzerland. In this way, he and the Swiss-wide institutions SUISA and FONDATION SUISA succeeded in promoting understanding in the areas of society, politics, business and culture across language barriers.
Roy has contributed a great deal to SUISA’s public profile and to internal cohesion and communication. His great and always astounding creativity has significantly shaped our cooperative’s image and our work in favour of music creators.
Thanks to his perseverance, even in difficult circumstances, special, far-reaching projects have repeatedly been realised for SUISA under his leadership. They have been ranged from an increased presence of Swiss music at the international music and publishing fair Midem in Cannes to the SUISA sound tower on the Arteplage in Biel in 2002 on the occasion of the national exhibition Expo.02.

With his global network of contacts, Roy Oppenheim was the ideal choice as President of the Communications Committee of the international umbrella organisation CISAC, whose annual conference he held in Zurich in 2004. The artistic supporting programme for this event particularly delighted and made a lasting impression on the international guests.
SUISA’s staff also benefited many times from his rich network of contacts in all cultural areas. A management seminar on Lake Murten with Ted Scapa’s sparkling artistic temperament will remain a lasting memory to us. Even achievements that do no longer stand out these days had their origins in the ideas of Roy Oppenheim: For example, he suggested a list of all employees with a photo on the intranet. In this way, he promoted cooperation and the shared spirit of the SUISA workforce beyond the linguistically separate locations of Lugano, Lausanne and Zurich. Roy launched the Prix Innovateur to attract suggestions for improvement from the SUISA workforce. Several of the award-winning ideas from SUISA employees are now making everyday life easier and have become best practice.
With Roy Oppenheim and his wife Rachela, we were able to experience countless enriching and amusing moments over many years. Roy has tirelessly lent a hand at many of SUISA’s communication events. Be it setting up stands for trade fairs or inviting the national Swiss Parliament to a festive evening of theatre and music in Lugano. In spring 2001, the National Council and the Council of States met for once in Ticino. Roy Oppenheim welcomed the delegates in front of the conference room and used his charm to convince many of them to take part in an unforgettable evening of performances by Swiss artists.
We consider ourselves fortunate to have worked with Roy Oppenheim and to have been inspired by his cosmopolitan, liberal nature, his inexhaustible curiosity and creativity.
We send our sincere condolences to his wife Rachela, his son Harry and his family. We will keep Roy as an important and formative part of SUISA’s corporate history in fond and vivid memory.
